Ingredients

For the oatmeal:

  • 6 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups steel-cut oats
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large apple, of your choice, chopped

Optional toppings:

  • apple slices, to taste, of your choice
  • maple syrup, to taste
  • pecans, to taste, toasted
  • cinnamon sticks, to taste

Directions

Step 1 –In a 4-quart slow cooker, add the water, the oats, the applesauce, 1/4 cup of the maple syrup, the cinnamon, the nutmeg, and the salt and stir to combine.

Step 2 –Cover and cook on low until the liquid is absorbed, about 6-8 hours.

Step 3 –Stir in the chopped apples.

Step 4 –Top with the remaining sliced apples, the remaining syrup, and the pecans.

Step 5 –Serve garnished with the cinnamon sticks.
