Ingredients

For the tostadas:

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 1/2 cups refried beans
  • 8 tostada shells or corn tortillas
  • olive oil, optional, to taste
  • salt, optional, to taste

For the optional toppings:

  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce, finely shredded
  • 1 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 2 cups Mexican cheese blend, shredded
  • olives, to taste
  • jalapeños, to taste
  • cilantro, to taste
  • red onions, to taste, diced
  • 2/3 cup sour cream

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F if using tostada shells or 375 degrees F if using the corn tortillas.

Step 2 –In a large skillet, cook the beef while crumbling until no longer pink, about 7-10 minutes.

Step 3 –Carefully drain the excess fat from the skillet.

Step 4 –Add the water and the taco seasoning to the cooked meat.

Step 5 –Simmer the meat mixture until thickened, about 5 minutes.

Step 6 –While the meat is cooking, heat the refried beans in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through.

Step 7 –Place the tostada shells on a baking sheet and bake until warm and fragrant, about 5 minutes. If using corn tortillas, brush each side of the tortilla with olive oil and sprinkle it generously with salt. Bake the seasoned tortillas for 4 minutes and then flip. Continue baking until browned and crisp, about 5-7 minutes.
