Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon plus 1/3 cup sugar, divided
- 1/2 cup water, warmed to 110-115 degrees F
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup 2% milk, warmed to 110-115 degrees F
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more, to taste, for dusting a work surface, divided
Directions
Step 1 –Grease two 18×26-inch baking sheets.
Step 2 –In the bowl of an electric stand mixer with the whisk attachment, add the yeast, 1 teaspoon of the sugar, and the warm water and whisk to dissolve.
Step 3 –Add the butter, the warm milk, the egg, the salt, the remaining sugar, and 2 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture and beat until smooth.
Step 4 –Add 2 cups of the remaining flour to the dough mixture and beat until a soft dough is formed.
Step 5 –Using the extra flour, lightly dust a flat work surface. Turn out the dough on the floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.
Step 6 –Transfer the kneaded dough to a greased bowl, turn once to grease the other side of the dough, cover with a clean dish cloth, and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Step 7 –With your hand, punch the dough down.
Step 8 –Using the extra flour, lightly dust a flat work surface again, turn the risen dough onto the floured surface, and cut the dough in half.
Step 9 –Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough pieces into 12-inch circles.
Step 10 –Cut the dough circles into 12 wedges.
Step 11 –Roll up the dough wedges, starting at the widest end.
Step 12 –Transfer the crescent rolls to the prepared baking sheets, point-side down and 2-inches apart.
Step 13 –Curve the ends of the rolls to form a crescent shape.
Step 14 –Cover the crescents with a clean towel and let them rise in a warm place until they have doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
Step 15 –About 5-10 minutes before the crescent rolls are done rising, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 16 –Uncover the risen crescent rolls and bake until golden-brown, about 10-12 minutes.
Step 17 –Transfer the baked crescent rolls to wire racks and let them cool slightly.
Step 18 –Serve.
