The holidays just aren’t completely without Classic Gingerbread Cookies! These cookies are sweet and enchantingly spicy, adding a wonderful warmth to your dessert table! They’re also endlessly customizable, so you can sprinkle them, frost them, or otherwise decorate them in whatever way fill you with holiday cheer! You’ll be dashing through the snow to get more Classic Gingerbread Cookies.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 3/4 cup molasses
- 1/4 cup water
Directions
Step 1 –Cream the shortening and sugar together.
Step 2 –Sift the flour with the salt, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and ground ginger.
Step 3 –Blend the flour mixture into the shortening mixture, alternating adding the ingredients with the molasses and the water, mixing between each addition.
Step 4 –Chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
Step 5 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 6 –Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
Step 7 –Roll the dough to 1/4-inch thick. You can create circular cookies, or use festive cookie cutters.
Step 8 –Lift the cookies with a broad spatula onto the prepared cookie sheet.
Step 9 –Bake above the oven center until the cookies spring back lightly from the center when poked, about 12 minutes. Do not overcook, or your cookies won’t be soft!
Step 10 –Remove the cookies from the sheets and let them cool on wire racks.
Step 11 –Serve.
