Coated with powdered sugar and warm cinnamon, Crispy Apple Fritter Rings are an energizing, carnival-style snack that you could eat any time, even for breakfast! And why not? They have apples in them, after all!
Ingredients
- canola oil, to taste, for frying
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, plus more, optional, for garnish
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
- 6 apples, Fuji or Granny Smith
- powdered sugar, optional, to taste, for topping
Directions
Step 1 –Preheat a heavy-bottomed pot filled with the canola oil over medium heat until the oil reaches 350 degrees F.
Step 2 –In a bowl, combine the flour, the baking powder, the nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon, the sugar, and the salt.
Step 3 –Add the eggs and the buttermilk and whisk until just combined.
Step 4 –Using biscuit cutters, cut out rings from the apples in varying sizes.
Step 5 –Dip the apple rings in the batter.
Step 6 –Carefully lift the rings out of the batter, letting the excess drip off, and slowly and carefully place them in the hot oil.
Step 7 –Let the apple rings cook on both sides until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Step 8 –While still warm, dust with the powdered sugar and the extra cinnamon.
Step 9 –Serve immediately.
