Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon olive oil, divided
- kosher salt, to taste
- black pepper, to taste
- 1 bulb fennel, cored and thinly sliced
- 1 large red pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 4 Italian sausage patties
- whole grain mustard, to taste
- 4 sesame buns, toasted
- fennel fronds, optional, for topping
Directions
Step 1 –In a large bowl, whisk the lemon juice, the honey, 1 tablespoon of the oil, the salt, and the pepper together.
Step 2 –Add the fennel, the red pepper, and the onion to the lemon juice mixture and toss to combine.
Step 3 –Allow the fennel mixture to sit, tossing occasionally, for 15 minutes.
Step 4 –Heat a grill pan over medium heat.
Step 5 –Rub the sausage patties with the remaining oil, then grill them until they are just cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side.
Step 6 –Spread the mustard onto the bottom buns, then top with the burgers.
Step 7 –Top the burgers with the fennel mixture, the fronds, and the burger tops.
