Ingredients
- 10 large egg, plus more as needed
- 2 cups milk, plus more as needed
- 3 cups cheddar cheese, grated
- 6 slices day-old bread, cut into 3/4-1 inch-wide cubes
- salt, to taste
- pepper, to taste
- Optional fillings:
- 1 cup sausage, cooked
- 1 cup ham, cooked and cubed
- 1/2 cup broccoli, chopped
- 1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped
- 1/4 cup green onions, chopped
- 1/4 cup onions, chopped and cooked
- 1 cup corn
- 4 slices bacon, cooked and chopped
Directions
Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 –Butter a 9×13-inch casserole dish.
Step 3 –Beat the eggs in a large bowl.
Step 4 –Mix in the milk and cheese.
Step 5 –Add the bread and carefully stir until all pieces of bread are moistened. Don’t over mix or the bread may disintegrate.
Step 6 –Add salt and pepper, moderating the amount added depending on your choice of fillings. For example, if using sausage, you should use a tiny amount of salt and pepper. If you have a lot of additions, you might need a couple more eggs to make sure that everything is at least touching some egg mixture. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of milk for every beaten egg you add.
Step 7 –Pour the mixture into the prepared casserole dish.
Step 8 –Bake until the top is browned and the center springs back when touched, about 50 minutes-1 hour.
Step 9 –Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Step 10 –Serve warm!
