A fluffy, creamy bed of eggs holds marvelous treats like sweet and smoky sausage, slices of tender bread, and a whole lot of sharp cheddar. It’s like the best egg sandwich in the world in casserole form! How could it not be a favorite?
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground maple pork sausage
- 6 slices soft hearty white bread
- 1 (8-ounce) package triple cheddar cheese, shredded
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon seasoned pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- fresh herbs, such as parsley leaves, optional, to taste, for garnish
Directions
Step 1 –Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 2 –In a large skillet, cook the sausage, stirring frequently, over medium heat until browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes.
Step 3 –Drain the sausage well on paper towels.
Step 4 –Cut and discard the bread crusts from the bread slices.
Step 5 –Cut the bread slices in half.
Step 6 –Arrange the bread pieces in the prepared baking dish, cutting them as needed to get them to fit and cover the entire bottom of the dish.
Step 7 –Sprinkle the sausage and the shredded cheese over the bread.
Step 8 –In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, the milk, the dry mustard, the pepper, and the salt.
Step 9 –Carefully pour the mixture over the sausage-cheese layer.
Step 10 –Cover the dish with plastic wrap and chill for 8 hours.
Step 11 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 12 –Let the chilled casserole stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Step 13 –Uncover and bake until set and golden, about 40 minutes.
Step 14 –Let the casserole stand for 10 minutes.
Step 15 –Garnish with the fresh herbs and serve.
