Granny’s Ham & Bean Soup

It’s cold outside and it’s Sunday. These two things can only mean one thing! It’s finally time for the long-awaited Granny’s Ham & Bean Soup… our family staple recipe! She knew when it was time to bring out the slow cooker and add a tasty ham hock, some mixed beans, and some perfectly seasoned broth to create the perfect meal for our family gathering! Warm, hearty, and heart-warming, Granny’s Ham & Bean Soup includes all the unforgettable homestyle flavors. Bring back the simpler times! There isn’t anything better than great food and seeing family before a crazy week ahead. This is comfort food for the win!

Ingredients

  • 1 (20-ounce) package Hurst’s HamBeens® 15 Bean Soup®, plus the seasoning packet
  • 8 cups low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • 1 ham hock, can substitute leftover ham bone with meat still attached
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • fresh herbs, optional, of your choice, to taste, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 –Rinse and drain the beans, then discard any of the unwanted debris. Set the seasoning packet aside.

Step 2 –In a 6-quart slow cooker, add the rinsed beans, the chicken broth, the ham hock, the onion, the garlic, and the chili powder and cook until the beans are tender, about 5 hours on high heat or about 7-8 hours on low heat.

Step 3 –Transfer the ham hock to a cutting board and chop the remaining meat off of the bone. Add the meat to the soup mixture and discard the bone.

Step 4 –Add the tomatoes and their juices, the reserved seasoning packet, and the lemon juice to the soup and stir to combine.

Step 5 –Cook the soup until it is heated through, about 30 minutes.

Step 6 –Serve garnished with the fresh herbs.
