Homemade Buttermilk Syrup

Everyone loves maple syrup, but there’s something about a homemade syrup that hits differently, you know? Something quaint, but also deeply satisfying. That’s the beauty of this Homemade Buttermilk Syrup. It has a wonderful richness and tang that can only come from your own stovetop. It’s a perfect sweet and tangy topping for pancakes, waffles, popovers, French toast… whatever you love pouring syrup over! Regular pancake syrup will never compare to Homemade Buttermilk Syrup!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • waffles, optional, to taste, cooked and warm, for serving, can substitute pancakes or French toast

Directions

Step 1 –In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add the butter, the sugar, and the buttermilk and heat, while stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted. Be careful, as the mixture can boil up fast.

Step 2 –Bring the butter mixture to a boil and boil for 1 minute.

Step 3 –Transfer the saucepan from the heat.

Step 4 –Add the vanilla and the baking soda to the butter mixture and whisk to combine. The mixture will foam, that’s normal.

Step 5 –Serve warm over the waffles.
