Mom’s Baked French Toast

French toast just like mom used to make! Mom’s Baked French Toast is the ultimate homemade breakfast food: just imagine the aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar wafting through your home and waking you up on a Sunday morning. Now imagine that amazingness on your table in all its delicious reality. Mom’s Baked French Toast is crispy on the outside and fluffy and moist on the inside, infused with creamy spiced flavors. Top it with your favorite fruits and sugar for an indulgent brunch that will get your day started on a sweet note.

Ingredients

For the French toast:

  • 8 ounces French bread, day-old, unsliced
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract or 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

For the topping:

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • freshly grated nutmeg, optional, to taste
  • fresh blueberries or raspberries, optional, to taste, for serving
  • confectioners’ sugar, optional, to taste, for serving

Directions

Step 1 –Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2 –Cut the bread into 1-inch-thick slices.

Step 3 –Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.

Step 4 –Lightly beat the eggs, the sugar, 1 tablespoon of the brown sugar, the vanilla extract, the maple extract, and the kosher salt.

Step 5 –Stir in the milk and the heavy cream.

Step 6 –Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, turning the slices once to coat.

Step 7 –Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours and up to overnight.

Step 8 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 9 –Turn the bread slices again to coat in the sauce.

Step 10 –Combine the flour, the remaining brown sugar, the butter, the cinnamon, and the nutmeg.

Step 11 –Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over the bread.

Step 12 –Bake, uncovered, until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the topping is golden-brown, about 40-45 minutes.

Step 13 –Let the French toast stand for 10 minutes before cutting.

Step 14 –Top the French toast with the blueberries and dust with the confectioners’ sugar.

Step 15 –Serve.
