Ingredients
- oil, for the baking dish
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated or ground
- kosher salt, to taste
- pepper, to taste
- 12 ounces sourdough bread, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1 small red onion, cut into 1/4-inch-thick wedges
- 1 Gala apple, cored and thinly sliced
- 4 ounces sliced ham, torn into 2-inch pieces
- 3 ounces cheddar cheese, grated
Directions
Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 –Oil a 2 1/2-3-quart baking dish.
Step 3 –In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, the milk, the mustard, the nutmeg, the salt, and the pepper.
Step 4 –Add the bread and let it sit, tossing occasionally, for 5 minutes.
Step 5 –Fold the onion, the apple, the ham, and the cheddar into the bread mixture.
Step 6 –Transfer the bread mixture to the prepared baking dish.
Step 7 –Bake until set and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, about 45-50 minutes. Cover the baking dish with foil if the bread pudding starts to brown too quickly.
