For those not from the area, it can be a surprise that dwellers by the Great Lakes love to pile olives atop their burger patties. But once you try The Great Lakes Burger, you’ll wonder why the practice isn’t more widespread! The burger is of course beefy, juicy, and savory, made all the more so with its topping of olives in a sour and creamy mixture. Feta cheese adds even more tang and umami to the burger, which makes this burger intensely flavorful with each and every bite. The Great Lakes Burger is easy to put together and quick to make, so it’s no effort to discover your new favorite burger!
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 teaspoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 cup green olives with pimientos, drained and sliced
- 1/4 cup seasoned mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon stone-ground mustard
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
- 1/4 cup feta cheese, optional, crumbled
- bibb lettuce leaves, optional, to taste
Directions
Step 1 –In a large bowl, combine the beef, the soy sauce, the Worcestershire sauce, the garlic powder, and the onion powder, mixing lightly but thoroughly.
Step 2 –Shape the meat mixture into 4 (1/2-inch-thick) patties, indenting the centers slightly. Indenting the center is critical to maintaining the patty shape.
Step 3 –Melt the butter over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet.
Step 4 –Cook the burgers in the melted butter until they reach 160 degrees F internally, about 4-6 minutes per side.
Step 5 –In a small bowl, combine the olives, the mayonnaise, and the mustard.
Step 6 –Serve the burgers on the buns with the olive mixture, the feta cheese, and the bibb lettuce.
