  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 tablespoons butter, cut into small cubes and frozen
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk, cold

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a large bowl, combine 4 cups of the flour, the salt, the baking powder, and the baking soda.

Step 3 –Add the butter cubes to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter to cut them in until the mixture forms the consistency of small peas.

Step 4 –Create a well in the flour mixture and pour the buttermilk into it.

Step 5 –Mix the dough with a spoon or fork until it just holds together.

Step 6 –Dust the work surface with the extra flour and turn the dough out onto it.

Step 7 –Form the dough into a rectangle, then fold 1/3 of its sides to the center to create 3 layers.

Step 8 –Press the dough firmly to reform the rectangle shape to about 1 1/2-inches tall.
