Ingredients

  • 2 pounds pizza dough
  • 1/4 cup pizza toppings, optional, of your choice
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 whole egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated
  • Italian seasoning, to taste
  • pizza sauce, optional, warmed, for dipping

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F, allowing a pizza stone to get hot while it preheats. Alternatively, if you don’t own a pizza stone, place a baking sheet in the oven.

Step 2 –Cut the dough into 8 equal-sized portions.

Step 3 –Roll the dough portions flat and fill each portion with about 1/4 cup of your toppings of choice.

Step 4 –Sprinkle the toppings with as much of the mozzarella cheese as you like.

Step 5 –Fold the dough back over the toppings and seal with a fork.

Step 6 –Place the calzones on parchment paper.

Step 7 –Using a knife, make a slit on top of the calzones so that steam is able to escape during baking. Using a pastry brush, brush the calzones with the beaten egg.

Step 8 –Finish with a sprinkle of the parmesan cheese and a dusting of the Italian seasoning.

Step 9 –Transfer the calzones on the parchment paper to the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet.

Step 10 –Bake until the crust is golden brown, about 12-15 minutes.
