Cheesy Potatoes & Ham

Cheese, ham, and potatoes: a terrific trio that ensures everyone has a great time at the dinner table! Cheesy Potatoes & Ham layers the tender potatoes between succulent ham, melty cheese, and a rich, savory onion sauce. Every slice is like a home-comfort homerun! It’s fairly easy to put Cheesy Potatoes & Ham together and even easier to sink into its scrumptious taste!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter, plus more, to taste, for greasing the baking dish
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • salt, to taste
  • ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups hickory-smoked ham, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated
  • scallions, to taste, sliced, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease a baking dish using the extra butter.

Step 3 –Melt the remaining butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 4 –Add the onions to the butter and cook, while stirring, until they start to soften, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5 –Sprinkle the flour over the onion and whisk together.

Step 6 –Cook the onion mixture until golden-brown, about 2 minutes.

Step 7 –Stir the half-and-half and the milk into the onion mixture and whisk until thickened, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 8 –Transfer the mixture from the heat.

Step 9 –Season the sauce with the salt and the pepper.

Step 10 –Add the garlic powder, the Worcestershire sauce, the onion powder, and the paprika.

Step 11 –Place 1/2 of the sliced potatoes into the prepared baking dish.

Step 12 –Top the potato layer with 1/2 of the ham, 1/2 of the cheddar cheese, and 1/2 of the Monterey Jack cheese, in that order.

Step 13 –Pour 1/2 of the sauce over the layers.

Step 14 –Repeat the layers once, starting with the potatoes and ending with the sauce.

Step 15 –Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Step 16 –Discard the foil and bake until the cheese is golden on top and the sauce is bubbling, about 20-30 minutes.

Step 17 –Garnish with the scallions and serve.
