Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 1 (8-ounce) carton mushrooms, finely chopped or pulsed in a food processor
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1 (15-ounce) can no-salt-added tomato sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 8 ounces whole-wheat rotini or fusilli
  • 1/2 cup parmesan or extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions

Step 1 –In a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil.

Step 2 –Add the beef, the mushrooms, and the onions to the oil and cook, while crumbling the meat, until the beef is no longer pink and the mushroom liquid has mostly evaporated, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 3 –Add the tomato sauce, the water, the Worcestershire sauce, the Italian seasoning, the salt, and the garlic powder to the beef mixture and stir to combine.

Step 5 –Cover the skillet and reduce the heat. Cook the rotini mixture, stirring once or twice, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid has absorbed, about 16-18 minutes.

Step 6 –Sprinkle the rotini mixture with the cheese and cook, covered, until the cheese has melted, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 7 –Serve.
