There’s no evidence that the real-life General Tso ever tried the dish named after him. However, if he had, we’re sure he would have loved it! He certainly would have appreciated the slow-cooked, savory, and tangy flavors of General Tso Stew, and so will you. Filled with shreds of tender chicken, fresh, bright garden vegetables, and delightful pickled peppers, General Tso Stew is exactly what you’ll need when the weather turns cold.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup tomato juice
  • 1/2 cup pickled cherry peppers, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon peanut oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
  • 1 pound chicken, shredded and cooked
  • 1 1/2 cups onion, chopped
  • 1 cup fresh broccoli, chopped
  • 1/4 cup green onions, chopped, optional, for topping
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional, toasted

Directions

Step 1 –In the pot of a slow cooker, combine the tomato juice, pickled cherry peppers, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, peanut oil, and crushed red pepper flakes.

Step 2 –Stir in the chicken, onion, and broccoli.

Step 3 –Cover the slow cooker and cook on low until the vegetables are tender, for about 2 hours.

Step 4 –Top with green onions and sesame seeds and serve!
