Gooey German Chocolate Brownies

Ingredients

For the brownies:

  • 1 (18-ounce) box brownie mix, plus the ingredients called-for on the box
  • 1 cup caramel bits
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

For the coconut pecan frosting:

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh coconut, shredded
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped

Directions

Step 1 –Prepare the brownie mix according to the package directions and bake in a 9×9-inch pan.

Step 2 –Allow the brownies to cool.

Step 3 –In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the caramel bits and the heavy cream, and microwave for 30 second increments, stirring between each increment, until melted.

Step 4 –Drizzle the caramel sauce over the brownies and allow the caramel sauce to cool.

Step 5 –In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine the butter, the egg yolks, the sugar, the evaporated milk, and the vanilla, stirring constantly, until it thickens, about 10 minutes.

Step 6 –Add the coconut and 1/2 cup of the pecans to the butter mixture and stir to combine.

Step 7 –Spread the frosting over the caramel layer and sprinkle with the remaining pecans.

Step 8 –Chill the brownies in the refrigerator.

Step 9 –Slice and serve.
