Exact Answer: 5 – 7 Days
A highly contagious illness, Influenza is a disease that affects your respiratory system. It is also known as flu which spreads through the respiratory droplets and affects your nose, throat, and lungs. Most of the time people recover fast from the flu, but there are exceptions as well. Children, the elderly, and pregnant women who are affected by influenza are most likely to develop complications. People having a weak immune system are also prone to developing flu complications. There are various symptoms of the flu. These symptoms are fever, headache, weakness, sore throat, etc. The people who are more prone to flu complications may also experience vomiting and diarrhea.
How Long After Taking Xofluza Are You Contagious?
|Recovery After Taking Xofluza||2 Days|
|Contagious After Taking Xofluza||5 – 7 Days|
If a person catches the flu, that person is said to be contagious for about a week. It is proved that even if you don’t show any symptoms of the flu, you are likely to be contagious 1 day before. After you have started showing its symptoms, for the next 4 – 5 days, you are contagious. There are some exceptions as well. It is observed that children below the age of 10, and adults having a weak immunity, can spread the flu for a longer period.
For such a health-threatening illness, an antibiotic was developed which will help the patients to recover. That antibiotic that can cure Influenza or flu, is called Baloxavir marboxil. In the market, this antiviral medicine is called Xofluza. FDA approved that this medicine can be given to adults and children of age 12 or older.
After a person starts showing the symptoms, xofluza must be given within 2 days. Xofluza can also be given to people who have been in contact with other flu-infected people. Xofluza is given to the patients orally and how much dosage must be given to particular people has also been decided. The recommended dosage for people weighing 40kg to 80kg is a single dose of 40mg, and people weighing 80kg should be given a single dose of 80mg.
Once you have taken a single dose of xofluza, the results can be seen within 4 hours. Most people recover from the flu within 2 days. But even if you’ve recovered from the flu, it is proved that you can still be contagious for 5 – 7 days, after you’ve first started showing your symptoms.
Why Are You Contagious for That Long After Taking Xofluza?
As mentioned before, you are considered contagious from the day before you’ve got your first symptoms, to the next 5 – 7 days, and consuming xofluza won’t cure you from being contagious. Thus, we can say that even if xofluza cures you in 2 days, you would still be contagious for the next 2 – 3 days. And in the case of children, the elderly, and people having low immunity, they are capable of spreading the flu for more than a week. When your symptoms of the flu are completely gone, only then you are no more contagious.
The flu virus is mostly spread through the air when the affected person sneezes or coughs. When a person breathes in such infected air, he will catch the flu as well. But this virus is also capable of surviving for up to 48 hours on the surface of a doorknob, table, etc. Thus, when a person touches such a thing where the virus is present, and then he touches his face, that person is likely to get affected by the flu.
The infected person starts being contagious from the day before his symptoms are seen. The person is considered to be most contagious during 3 – 4 days after the symptoms have developed. He’s still contagious for 1 – 2 days after his symptoms have disappeared. Fever is the most reliable symptom which can tell whether you’re contagious or not. But sometimes you can still be contagious, even if your fever has been cured. Hence, it is better if you take necessary precautions and stay away from people for about a week after getting infected by the flu virus.
Therefore, it is suggested that you count the days after you show your first symptoms, and once seven days have passed, you can consider that you’re no longer contagious. This is because whether you show symptoms or not, you may still be contagious. Xofluza won’t help you to stop being contagious. The only way to not threaten another person’s health is to take necessary precautions. Precautions like always covering your mouth when you are sneezing or coughing. You should also stay away from other people for those seven days. But in cases of children, the elderly, and people having a weak immune system, it’s better to just wait for your doctor to give you the green signal before engaging with other people.
