How Long Does A Garbage Disposal Last (And Why)?

Exact Answer: 8 Years To 15 Years

The life expectancy of garbage disposals depends upon several different factors. Some of these factors are the type of garbage that is being put at the disposal, how frequently the garbage disposals are being used, and other such factors.

How Long Does A Garbage Disposal Last?

Quality of garbage disposalTime
Good quality garbage disposal12 years to 15 years
Bad quality garbage disposal8 years to 11 years

But apart from these factors, there is one major factor that plays a vital role in determining the time for how long garbage disposal would last. That major time determining factor is the quality of garbage disposals.

When it comes to the quality of a product, that product could be of either good quality or bad quality. Quality includes how well the product has been formed, the quality of material used in the making of that product, and other such things are considered.

The same goes for garbage disposals as well. Garbage disposal would be of either good quality or a poor or bad quality garbage disposal. Depending upon what quality of garbage disposal is being used, the time for how long it would last varies.

Thus the quality of garbage disposal must be considered before calculating the time for how long garbage disposal would last. It is quite obvious that good quality or a premium quality garbage disposal would last for a longer duration of time as compared to poor quality or a bad quality garbage disposal.

In most general cases, a good quality garbage disposal or a premium quality garbage disposal lasts for about a minimum of 12 years to a maximum of 15 years.

While on the other hand, in most cases, a bad quality garbage disposal or a poor quality garbage disposal lasts for about a minimum of 8 years to a maximum of 11 years.

Why Does A Garbage Disposal Last That Long?

The reason behind why a good quality or a premium quality garbage disposal lasts for a longer duration of time as compared to a bad quality garbage disposal or a poor quality garbage disposal is because the good quality ones work more efficiently as compared to the poor quality ones.

Apart from the quality of the garbage disposals, another important factor that determines the time for how long garbage disposal would last is what is being put in the garbage disposal.

Though it is said that all the biodegradable waste, most prominently kitchen waste can be dumped into the garbage disposals. But some of such waste should be avoided from being put into the garbage disposals because it reduces the efficiency of the garbage disposal.

As the efficiency of garbage disposal reduces, the life expectancy of that garbage disposal reduces simultaneously as well.

Kitchen products like oil and butter should not be dumped into garbage disposals because it gets solidified within the garbage disposal. As a result, the efficiency of the garbage disposal reduces as well.

Moreover, kitchen wastes include stringy food peels, vegetable peels, or any sort of stringy food, for example, potato peels, onion peels, asparagus, corn husks, celery stalks, and other such kitchen waste should not be put into the garbage disposals.

The reason behind that is such stringy kitchen waste when dumped into the garbage disposals can get into the motor and the blades of the garbage disposals. As a result, it can hinder the functionality of the garbage disposals which might make them not last for a longer duration of time.

Other kitchen wastes that should not be dumped into the garbage disposals or might lead to its shorter life expectancy are citrus peels, meat, bones, coffee grinds, eggshells, pasta, rice, and nuts.

Conclusion

Lastly, if the garbage disposal is serviced at instances and cleaned regularly then it can increase the life expectancy of garbage disposal from a minimum of 2 years to a maximum of 5 years on average.

Cleaning the garbage disposals should be done every month which includes cleaning the blades and the inside of the garbage disposals. While on the other hand, servicing of garbage disposals should be done after a span of every 6 months.
