King Breakfast Bake

Make way! Make way! Make way for the new King of Breakfast! King Breakfast Bake is a royally delicious casserole that aims to make mornings a crowning affair! Fluffy, hearty eggs and spicy, savory pork sausage baked up until regal-y golden… mmm, what a sight to behold! The fact that the King Breakfast Bake is also creamy and wonderfully cheesy just proves it has the right to rule the morning! What a stately and scrumptious way to start the day!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more, to taste, for greasing the pan
  • 1 pound pork sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 loaf (18 slices) white sandwich bread, crusts removed and bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 scant teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Step 1 –Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with the extra butter.

Step 2 –In a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter.

Step 3 –Add the sausage to the melted butter and cook, while crumbling, until it is no longer pink, about 10 minutes.

Step 4 –Transfer the sausage to a large mixing bowl, leaving the drippings in the pan.

Step 5 –Return the pan to the heat and lower the heat to medium.

Step 6 –Add the onions and the remaining butter to the sausage drippings and cook, while stirring constantly, until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 7 –Add the onion to the sausage in the mixing bowl.

Step 8 –Add the bread cubes, the cheddar cheese, and the parsley to the sausage mixture and toss well to combine.

Step 9 –Spread the sausage mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan.

Step 10 –In a medium bowl, add the eggs, the half-and-half, the salt, and the pepper, and whisk to combine.

Step 11 –Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage mixture.

Step 12 –Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to overnight.

Step 13 –Set the oven rack in the middle position.

Step 14 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 15 –Unwrap the casserole and bake until puffed and golden-brown, about 1 hour.

Step 16 –Slice and serve.
