Special Delivery Rolls

Not all of life’s most perfect gifts come bundled up in sparkly ribbon and colorful wrapping paper! Nope! Some come out of the oven, piping hot and delightfully delicious. Surprise! Special Delivery Rolls are here to make your mealtime quite the treat. Baked to a beautiful golden-brown and served with a pat of melty butter, these little bites are quite a stupendous surcee. Make every day a little bit more magical thanks to these Special Delivery Rolls!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water, about 105 degrees F
  • 2/3 cup nonfat instant dry milk
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened, plus more, to taste, for brushing the rolls
  • 1 large egg
  • 5 1/2 cups bread or all-purpose flour, plus more, to taste, for dusting a work surface
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1 –Grease two baking sheets.

Step 2 –In the large bowl of an electric stand mixer, add the water and the milk powder and stir until the powder dissolves.

Step 3 –Sprinkle the yeast on top of the powder mixture, stir, and then cover with plastic.

Step 4 –Let the yeast mixture sit until it starts to look foamy and creamy, about 5 minutes.

Step 5 –Add the sugar, the salt, 1/3 cup of the butter, the egg, and 3 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture and use the dough hook to mix on low speed.

Step 6 –Increase the mixer’s speed to medium and mix the dough mixture for 2 minutes.

Step 7 –Stop the mixer and add 2 cups of the flour.

Step 8 –Mix the dough mixture on low speed until the ingredients are moist.

Step 9 –Increase the mixer’s speed to medium and mix for 2 minutes.

Step 10 –Gradually add 1/2 cup of the flour to the dough mixture until it is soft and pulling away from the sides of the bowl. It should not be overly sticky or stiff.

Step 11 –Stop the mixer and scrape the dough off the sides of the bowl.

Step 12 –Add the vegetable oil around the sides of the bowl.

Step 13 –Turn the dough over in bowl so it is covered in the oil.

Step 14 –Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.

Step 15 –Dust a work surface with the extra flour and place the dough on it.

Step 16 –Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and brush it with the extra butter.

Step 17 –Divide the dough in half, then roll the halves into rectangles.

Step 18 –Cut the large rectangles into multiple 2×4-inch rectangles, there should be about 24 total.

Step 19 –Roll the smaller rectangles up and place them on the prepared baking sheets.

Step 20 –Let the rolls rise in a warm place until they double in size, about 45 minutes.

Step 21 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 22 –Bake the rolls until the tops and bottoms are lightly-browned, about 15 minutes.

Step 23 –Brush the rolls with the extra butter.

Step 24 –Serve.
