Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons white sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup apple, chopped
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease a 9-inch square pan.

Step 3 –Sift the flour, the baking powder, the salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of the cinnamon into a medium bowl.

Step 4 –Stir 2 tablespoons of the white sugar and the remaining cinnamon together in a small bowl.

Step 5 –Mix the melted butter, the brown sugar, and the remaining white sugar together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until smooth.

Step 6 –Stir the egg and the vanilla into the butter mixture.

Step 7 –Blend the flour mixture into the butter mixture until just combined.

Step 8 –Stir the apple and the walnuts into the batter.

Step 9 –Evenly spread the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over top.

Step 10 –Bake the bars until the top springs back when lightly pressed, about 25-30 minutes.

Step 11 –Let the bars cool completely in the pan.

Step 12 –Cut the bars into squares and serve.
