Vanilla Texas Sheet Cake

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

For the frosting:

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
  • 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup milk

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease a 15×10-inch baking pan.

Step 3 –In a medium-sized saucepan, bring 1 cup of the butter and the water to a boil.

Step 4 –In a large bowl, add the flour and the sugar and mix to combine.

Step 5 –Add the eggs, the sour cream, 1 teaspoon of the vanilla extract, and the baking soda to the flour mix.

Step 6 –Slowly, stirring as you do so, add the boiling water and butter mixture to the flour mixture, taking extra care not to scramble the eggs.

Step 7 –Stir the mixture until a smooth batter forms.

Step 8 –Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.

Step 9 –Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the cake is golden brown, about 20-22 minutes.

Step 10 –Allow the cake to cool for 20 minutes.

Step 11 –While the cake cools, in a medium-sized bowl, combine the remaining vanilla extract and the powdered sugar.

Step 12 –In a medium-sized saucepan, add the remaining butter and the milk.

Step 13 –Bring the butter and milk mixture to a boil.

Step 14 –Transfer the saucepan from the heat.

Step 15 –Pour the butter mixture into the powdered sugar mixture and stir until smooth and combined.

Step 16 –Spread the frosting mixture over the warm cake.

Step 17 –Serve.
