Ingredients

  • 4 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 ounces whiskey, rum, or orange juice
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and grated
  • 8 teaspoons orange zest, grated
  • oil, for deep-fat frying
  • confectioners’ sugar, optional, to taste, for topping

Directions

Step 1 –In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and sugar.

Step 2 –In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and whiskey until combined.

Step 3 –Add the wet mixture to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened.

Step 4 –Fold in the apples and orange zest.

Step 5 –In an electric skillet or deep fryer, heat the oil to 375 degrees F.

Step 6 –Drop the batter by tablespoonfuls, a few at a time, into the hot oil.

Step 7 –Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes on each side.

Step 8 –Drain the fritoles on paper towels.

Step 9 –Dust with the confectioners’ sugar.

Step 10 –Serve.
