Apple Slab Pie

Apple Slab Pie is a slam dunk of a dessert! It gets its unique name for its shape: instead of the typical round pie shape, Apple Slab Pie lays out its buttery, flaky crust and sweet, cinnamon-infused fruit filling as… well, a slab. This makes the pie look distinct, delectable, and definitely worth digging into! It’s perfect for sharing and for impressing everyone at the party! Don’t forget the ice cream!

Ingredients

  • 8 apples, plus more as needed—Granny Smith preferred
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • salt, to taste
  • orange zest, to taste
  • 4 (8-inch) refrigerated pie crusts
  • vanilla ice cream, optional, to taste, for serving

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Step 2 –Peel, core, and chop the apples into 1/2-inch chunks.

Step 3 –In a bowl, mix the chopped apples, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and orange zest.

Step 4 –On parchment paper, stack 2 of the pie crusts on top of each other.

Step 5 –Roll the pie crusts into a 17×12-inch rectangle.

Step 6 –Cut the dough rectangle into 3/4-inch strips diagonally.

Step 7 –Roll out the remaining 2 pie crusts.

Step 8 –Place the crusts on a 15×10-inch baking sheet.

Step 9 –Spread the apple mixture onto the pie crust in the baking dish.

Step 10 –Using the dough strips, form a lattice top with the pie crust strips.

Step 11 –Tuck the crust inward around the edges.

Step 12 –Bake until the crust is golden brown and cooked through, about 35-40 minutes.

Step 13 –Serve warm with ice cream.
