Down-Home Biscuits ‘n’ Gravy Casserole

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 pound ground sausage, without casings
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 2/3 cups milk
  • kosher salt, to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 (8-count) can large biscuits
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease the bottom of an 8×8-inch baking dish.

Step 3 –Adjust the oven rack to the lower middle position.

Step 4 –In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat until hot.

Step 5 –Add the onion and the garlic to the oil and cook, while stirring, until the onions are aromatic and translucent, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 6 –Add the ground sausage to the onion mixture and cook, while crumbling the meat, until the sausage is no longer pink.

Step 7 –Add the flour to the sausage mixture and gently stir until it is fully incorporated.

Step 8 –Add the milk to the sausage mixture and stir to combine.

Step 9 –Add the kosher salt and the black pepper to the sausage mixture, bring it to a low boil, and cook, while stirring, until the sauce thickens to the desired gravy consistency.

Step 10 –Cut the biscuits into even quarters.

Step 11 –Evenly layer 1/2 of the biscuit quarters into the bottom of the prepared baking dish and bake, uncovered, until they are puffy and golden-brown, about 10 minutes.

Step 12 –Carefully transfer the baking dish from the oven and evenly spoon the gravy over the baked biscuits.

Step 13 –Evenly place the remaining biscuit quarters on top of the gravy.

Step 14 –Loosely cover the dish with the foil and bake for 14 minutes.

Step 15 –Discard the foil and bake until the tops of the biscuits are puffy and golden-brown, about 10 minutes.

Step 16 –Garnish the casserole with the parsley and serve immediately.
