Why Do Grapes Last For This Long In The Fridge?

Grapes are already rich in water. If kept in the place where there is moisture present, it will take the grapes soggy and unfit. Another factor that affects the goodness of grapes is humidity. If grapes are kept in a relatively humid place, the ripening process will get doubled in speed. They may cause the over-ripening of grapes.

Grapes are well known for their use in the formation of wine. That means microorganisms work quickly with grapes. Hence, if kept at room temperature, there are chances that the grape gets in contact with any microorganism which may make it unfit for consumption. These also contain polyphenols which undergo oxidation when comes under contact with air. This causes the oxidation of grapes.

For the above-mentioned reasons, it is advised to store the grapes inside the fridge. This is because it has a constant temperature. There is cold and no humidity and heat which may speed the ripening process of grapes. Microorganisms are also not able to thrive at this lower temperature, hence the fruit remains contamination free as well.

However, while storing grapes in the fridge some things should be kept in mind. It is not recommended to wash the grapes before storing them in the fridge. This is because excess moisture will cause the fruit to decay. It is told to keep them unwashed in an airtight container for best results.
