Old German Honey Cookies

These traditional and delicious treats come straight from Germany ready to put a smile on your face! Old German Honey Cookies are tender and melt-in-your-mouth sweet, with the floral golden flavor of honey baked right into each one! A hint of warm ginger adds a little balance to make sure each of the Old German Honey Cookies are as inviting as possible. You’ll be warming up to these honeyed sweets in no time!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a saucepan over low heat, add the sugar, the shortening, and the honey and stir to combine.

Step 3 –Let the sugar mixture cool.

Step 4 –In a bowl, add the eggs, the vanilla, the baking soda, and the ginger and stir to combine.

Step 5 –Gradually add the egg mixture to the cooled honey mixture, stirring to combine. Make sure the honey mixture is cool enough so it does not scramble the eggs.

Step 6 –Slowly add the flour to the mixture and stir until well-blended.

Step 7 –Drop the dough by the teaspoonful onto cookie sheets about 2 inches apart.

Step 8 –Bake the cookies until golden, about 12-15 minutes.

Step 9 –Serve.
