Poor Man’s Hamburgers

If you don’t have a bun or you just want to make your burger a little more exciting, these Poor Man’s Hamburgers are a shocking way to enjoy a hearty meal! You won’t even miss the fluffy bun once you cut into these juicy patties that are oozing with melty cheese from the inside. Yes… the cheese is inside. And yes, you’re going to love it. You’re also going to love placing it on top of a pile of crispy potatoes and drizzling it with your favorite brown gravy. Is your mouth watering yet? Don’t be thrown off by the title, Poor Man’s Hamburgers… this is a great flavor for an even greater deal!

Ingredients

  • bacon grease, to taste, leftover from cooked bacon
  • 1/4 cup onions, chopped
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 jalapeños, chopped
  • 2 pounds ground beef or ground venison
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 4 ounces pepper jack cheese, cut into 5 equal cubes
  • potatoes, to taste, fried and warm, for serving
  • brown gravy, to taste, store-bought or homemade, cooked and warm, for serving

Directions

Step 1 –Coat a griddle with the bacon grease.

Step 2 –Add the onions, the bell peppers, and the jalapeños to the bacon grease and cook until they are soft. Set them aside.

Step 3 –In a large bowl, season the beef with the salt, the pepper, and the onion powder and mix to combine.

Step 4 –Separate the beef mixture into 10 equal sections, about 1/4-pound each, and shape them into patties, flattening them down.

Step 5 –Add equal amounts of the sautéed pepper mixture to the middle of 5 of the patties.

Step 6 –Top each of the pepper mixture layers with 1 cube of the cheese, then top with the remaining 5 patties, pressing the edges to seal.

Step 7 –On the same griddle, fry the patties until they reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F, about 5-6 minutes per side.

Step 8 –Serve the patties over the fried potatoes and topped with the gravy.
