Ingredients

  • 5 slices of bacon, diced
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 (16-ounce) package of frozen butterbeans
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 12 cups water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon cracked pepper

Directions

Step 1 –In a large dutch oven over medium heat, cook the bacon and the onion until the bacon is cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 2 –Add the brown sugar and coat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 3 –Stir in the butterbeans and the butter until the butter is melted and the beans are thoroughly coated.

Step 4 –Stir in the water.

Step 5 –Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 6 –Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the beans are very tender and the liquid is thickened and just below the tops of the beans, about 2 hours.

Step 7 –Stir in the salt and pepper.

Step 8 –Serve.
