Soda Baked Beans

Soda Baked Beans slow-cooks the tender, creamy beans in, you guessed it, soda. The resulting notes of maltiness and caramel add a new layer of flavor to the sweet-and-savory side dish. The other elements of the classic bean sauce—tangy mustard and barbeque sauce, smoky brown sugar, and deeply savory Worcestershire sauce—pair perfectly with the succulent pork and bacon mixed throughout. Soda Baked Beans may be a new way to make an old favorite, but the feeling of love you’ll have for it will stay just the same the same!

Ingredients

  • 4 (28-ounce) cans pork and beans
  • 12 slices bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup barbeque sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups Dr Pepper®
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • green onions, optional, to taste, chopped, for garnish

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a large bowl, add the pork and beans, the bacon, the onion, the green bell pepper, the brown sugar, the barbeque sauce, the yellow mustard, the Worcestershire sauce, the soda, the salt, and the pepper and stir and fold to combine.

Step 3 –Pour the bean mixture into a large Dutch oven or a cast-iron skillet or a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 4 –Bake until the mixture reaches your desired consistency, about 2 hours. The longer it bakes, the thicker it will become.

Step 5 –Allow the beans to cool for 10-15 minutes.
