All-American Chili Cheese Dogs

Independence Day, summer cookouts, or barbecues all call for some indulgence. Burgers, hot dogs, and chicken are all great, but you need a head-turner, a show-stopper. All-American Chili Cheese Dogs are that headliner dish; just look at them! Each dog is topped with beefy, deeply savory, spicy, and zesty chili topped with melted cheddar cheese. Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef, 90% lean
  • 1 (15-ounce) can of tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • cayenne pepper, to taste
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns, split
  • cheddar cheese, optional, shredded, for topping
  • relish, optional, to taste, for topping
  • onion, optional, chopped, for serving

Directions

Step 1 –In a large skillet, cook the beef, crumbling it as it cooks, over medium heat until no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 2 –Drain the fat from the skillet.

Step 3 –Stir in the tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce, dried minced onion, garlic powder, ground mustard, chili powder, pepper, and cayenne pepper.

Step 4 –Place the hot dogs in a 3-quart slow cooker.

Step 5 –Top the hot dogs with the beef mixture.

Step 6 –Cook, covered, on low until heated through, about 4-5 hours.

Step 7 –Serve on buns and top with your favorite toppings.
