After that, allow the turkey slowly to thaw at a temperature of 40 Fahrenheit or lower. A temperature higher than that will not allow the turkey to defrost, but a very low temperature can also spoil the turkey soon.

Never let the meat stay at room temperature for long. The time taken to defrost a whole turkey depends on the weight of the turkey and the room temperature. For 4 lbs of turkey, it takes about a day to defrost, 2 days for 8 lbs, 3 days for 12 lbs, and so on.

Always keep the cooked frozen turkey on sheets, so that when it defrosts, the juices don’t run off all over. One can place uncooked raw turkey in the fridge for a day or two. There are many other methods to defrost a turkey. Some of the other methods include the cold water method and the refrigerator method.

Freeze the turkey and defrost it for a day when you need it. If one wants to defrost the turkey sooner, they can always increase the room temperature. Never let it defrost too long or it will get spoiled.
