It actually only takes only three simple ingredients to make it, that is… if you’re not craving some frosting spread over top. But who wants a bare cake? We rarely do. So, if you add just a handful more pantry-staple ingredients to the mix, you can whip up the fluffiest cream cheese frosting there ever was! Yummy! Baking can be a piece of cake… pun intended! For the cake:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 box Devil’s food cake mix
  • 1 (21-ounce) can cherry pie filling

For the optional cream cheese frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon almond extract
  • maraschino cherries, optional, to taste, for garnish

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –Coat a 9×13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.

Step 3 –In a large bowl, add the eggs and use an electric mixer to beat until fluffy.

Step 4 –Add the cake mix and the cherry pie filling to the eggs and beat, starting on low speed and gradually increasing to medium-high, until smooth.

Step 5 –Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and evenly spread it out with a spatula.

Step 6 –Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 3 minutes.

Step 7 –Let the cake cool in the baking pan on a wire rack.

Step 8 –While the cake is cooling, add the cream cheese in a bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until it is fluffy.
