Old-Time Buttermilk Pie

Everything old can be new again. Old-Time Buttermilk Pie is sure to become your new favorite pie! A homemade flaky crust and a sweet, creamy, custard-like filling come together giving you that comforting feeling that grandma would be so proud of. It’s time for Old-Time Buttermilk Pie; the perfect coffee and company companion. What a sweet treat!

Ingredients

    For the crust:

    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more, to taste, for dusting a work surface
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 1/4 cup 2% milk, cold
    • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

    For the filling:

    • 1/2 cup butter, softened
    • 2 cups sugar
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 cup lemon juice
    • whipped cream, optional, to taste, store-bought or homemade, for topping
    • fresh berries, optional, to taste, of your choice, for topping

    Directions

    Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

    Step 2 –In a large bowl, add 1 1/2 cups of the flour and the salt and whisk to combine.

    Step 3 –Add the shortening to the flour mixture, cutting it into the flour mixture until it is crumbly.

    Step 4 –Gradually add the cold milk and 1 of the eggs and stir gently to incorporate.

    Step 5 –With the extra flour, lightly dust a work surface.

    Step 6 –Turn the dough out onto the prepared work surface and roll it into a 1/8-inch-thick circle.

    Step 7 –Transfer the dough circle to a 9-inch pie plate.

    Step 8 –Trim the crust to 1/2-inch beyond the rim of the pie plate and flute the edges.

    Step 9 –In a large bowl, add the butter and the sugar and beat until creamed together.

    Step 10 –Add the remaining 3 tablespoons of the flour to the butter mixture and beat to combine.

    Step 11 –Add the remaining eggs, 1 at a time, to the butter mixture and beat well after each addition.

    Step 12 –Add the buttermilk, the vanilla, the cinnamon, and the lemon juice and stir until well-mixed.

    Step 13 –Pour the filling into the pie crust.

    Step 14 –Bake until the center is set, about 45-50 minutes.

    Step 15 –Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack.

    Step 16 –Serve the pie topped with the whipped cream and the fresh berries.
