Meatballs and tomato sauce are seen going hand-in-hand, but Sweet and Sour Meatballs serve up a new combination that you’ll want to eat up again and again! The sauce is sweet and sour, with plenty of tang and a smoky-savory flavor to emphasize the beefiness of the meatballs. The meatballs themselves are melt-in-your-mouth tender with a lovely golden brown jacket for extra flavor. Sweet and Sour Meatballs are ideal served over mashed potatoes so you don’t miss even a single drop of the sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce

Directions

Step 1 –In a medium bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, and onion, mixing them thoroughly.

Step 2 –Shape the meat mixture into golf-ball-sized balls.

Step 3 –In a large skillet over medium heat, gently brown the meatballs, for about 5-7 minutes.

Step 4 –In a large saucepan, combine the brown sugar, flour, water, white vinegar, and soy sauce, mixing thoroughly.

Step 5 –Add the meatballs to the sauce.

Step 6 –Bring the sauce to a boil.

Step 7 –Reduce the heat to low and allow the meatballs and sauce to simmer, stirring often, for 30 minutes. The meatballs’ interior should reach between 135-150 degrees F when tested with a meat thermometer.

Step 8 –Serve hot.
