Ingredients

For the bake:

  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 24 slices French bread, 1/2-inch-thick
  • 1 (12-ounce) jar orange marmalade
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups milk, not skim
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup walnuts, finely chopped

For the syrup:

  • 1 1/4 cups maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest

Directions

Step 1 –Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2 –Spread the butter over 1 side of each slice of the French bread.

Step 3 –Place half of the bread slices into the baking dish, buttered-side down.

Step 4 –Spread the marmalade evenly over the top of the bread slices in the baking dish.

Step 5 –Place the other half of the bread slices on top of the marmalade, buttered-side up.

Step 6 –In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, the milk, the sugar, the vanilla, and the nutmeg until fully blended.

Step 7 –Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices.

Step 8 –Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 6 hours and up to overnight.

Step 9 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 10 –Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and uncover.

Step 11 –Sprinkle the casserole with the walnuts.

Step 12 –Bake until the bread is golden-brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, about 40-50 minutes.

Step 13 –Remove the casserole from the oven and let it stand for 5-10 minutes.

Step 14 –In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the maple syrup, the orange juice, and the orange zest.

Step 15 –Cook until heated through and combined.

Step 16 –Serve the bake warm with the syrup!
