Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes

Sliced potatoes paired with a creamy cheddar cheese sauce is what comfort dreams are made of. Make your guests feel right at home with these Cheddar Scalloped Potatoes. They are always a welcome guest at the dinner table!

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, very thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, grated

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –Coat a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick spray.

Step 3 –In a saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter.

Step 4 –Add the flour to the melted butter and cook for 1 minute.

Step 5 –Whisk the milk, the salt, and the pepper into the flour mixture and bring to a low boil.

Step 6 –Reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce thickens.

Step 7 –Evenly place 1/3 of the potatoes and then 1/3 of the onions in the prepared casserole dish.

Step 8 –Pour 1/3 of the sauce over the onions.

Step 9 –Repeat the layers twice, starting with the potato slices and ending with the sauce.

Step 10 –Top the sauce with the grated cheddar cheese.

Step 11 –Bake the scalloped potatoes until they are tender, about 45-50 minutes. Loosely cover with aluminum foil if the cheese starts to brown too quickly.

Step 12 –Let the scalloped potatoes sit for 10 minutes.
