Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage links
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth, plus more, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups penne
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, shredded
  • salt, to taste

Directions

Step 1 –In a large pot over medium heat, brown the sausages and the onions, for about 5-7 minutes.

Step 2 –Add the milk, 1 1/2 cups of the broth, and the penne to the pot.

Step 3 –Stir in the cornstarch, the garlic powder, the sugar, the paprika, and the pepper.

Step 4 –Bring the sausage mixture to a boil.

Step 5 –Reduce the heat to a simmer and cover.

Step 6 –Cook until the pasta is tender and the sausage is cooked through at 145 degrees F, about 10-16 minutes. Add the extra broth, as needed, as it cooks.

Step 7 –Remove the pot from the heat.

Step 8 –Transfer the sausage to a cutting board and slice.

Step 9 –Stir the cheddar, Gruyère, and parmesan into the pasta mixture until melted, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 10 –Stir in the sliced sausage.

Step 11 –Taste for seasoning and add the salt, as needed.

Step 12 –Serve warm.
