Ingredients
For the apple filling:
- 5 cups apples, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, peeled and cored, sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the cobbler topping:
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- whipped cream, optional, to taste, for serving
Directions
Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 –In a large bowl, add the apples, the lemon juice, the brown sugar, the cinnamon, and the nutmeg and toss to coat.
Step 3 –In an ungreased 9×13-inch baking dish, add the butter.
Step 4 –Transfer the baking dish to the oven and let the butter melt, about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to let the butter brown or burn.
Step 5 –Transfer the baking dish from the oven to a wire rack and let the butter cool completely.
Step 6 –In a separate large bowl, add the flour, the granulated sugar, the baking powder, and the salt and whisk to combine.
Step 7 –Add the milk and the vanilla extract to the flour mixture and stir to combine.
Step 8 –Evenly pour the batter mixture over the top of the cooled melted butter in the baking dish but do not stir.
Step 9 –Evenly spoon the apple mixture on top of the batter mixture, but do not stir.
Step 10 –Bake until golden-brown and set, about 50-55 minutes.
Step 11 –Serve topped with the whipped cream.
