Exact Answer: 5 Days To 7 Days
Every edible item has a particular shelf life within which that edible item must be consumed. Once the edible item has crossed its shelf life mark, it will lead to its decay, or rotting of that edible item.
If the edible item is consumed when rotten, it can lead to food poisoning or any other such severe health issues. But, many factors can either increase or decrease the shelf life of a food item.
How Long Does Corn Last In The Fridge?
|Airtight packaging or vacuum packaging
|1 week to 2 weeks
|5 days to 7 days
The same is the case with corn and its shelf life. Although corn has a shelf life of a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 5 days when they are kept at room temperature, keeping them in the fridge can readily increase their shelf life to a certain extent in time.
Though keeping them in the fridge makes the shelf life of corn longer as compared to the shelf life of corn when kept at room temperature, there are still many factors that determine the shelf life of corn when kept in the fridge.
Among the many time determining factors, the major factor is the storage conditions of the corn when kept in the fridge. There are majorly two ways in which corn can be stored, that is, airtight packaging, and loose packaging.
The shelf life of the corn in the fridge when it is packed using airtight packaging is longer as compared to corn when packed in loose packaging.
By airtight packaging, it is meant that the corn is either stored in an airtight container or a vacuum bag. In most cases, the shelf life of corn in the fridge in airtight packaging is about a minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 2 weeks.
By loose packaging, it is meant that the corn is stored in a loose packet where it is completely exposed to the outward atmosphere. In most general cases, the shelf life of corn in the fridge in loose packaging is about a minimum of 5 days to a maximum of 7 days.
Why Does Corn Last In The Fridge For That Long?
The major reason why the shelf life of the corn in the fridge when kept in airtight packaging is longer than the shelf life of the corn in the fridge when kept in loose packaging is because of its exposure to the atmosphere.
For most edible items to get decayed or rotten, the most prominent factor is its exposure to two major things. Those two things are exposure to the atmosphere and exposure to moisture.
When an edible item is exposed to two of these factors, the shelf life of that edible item decreases to a significant extent making it rot faster than its actual shelf life.
The reason behind why the shelf life of the corn is shorter when stored in loose packaging is because when stored in such a way the corn can freely interact with the atmosphere and the moisture present in the air as well.
While on the other hand, when the corn in the fridge is stored in airtight packaging, it is not able to interact with the atmosphere and the moisture. As a result, the shelf life of the corn in the fridge stored in an airtight packaging is long.
There are many ways by which the shelf life of corn in the fridge can be increased. One of the most effective ways is to store the corn in an airtight container or a vacuum bag.
Moreover, the temperature of the fridge should be reduced. Storing the corn in the freezer can increase its shelf life up to a minimum of 3 weeks to a maximum of 4 weeks. Storing the corn in industrial freezers can increase its shelf life by up to 6 months.
Once the corn has gone bad, it can be identified by its look and the peculiar smell of being rotten. Rotten corn has blackish-brown spots over them and its size might either be too shrinked or too inflated.
