Waffles don’t have to be just sweet; the invention of chicken-and-waffles proves that they can join up with savory any day. Savory Waffles just cut out the middleman by incorporating succulent bacon and spicy sausage right into the batter! That way, when it’s cooked to a crisp, golden-brown and drizzled with smoky-sweet maple syrup, you already have the balance of flavor you’re looking for this morning! Savory Waffles… what a savory treat!
Ingredients
- 1 cup breakfast sausage, diced
- 1/2 cup bacon, diced
- 1 cup yellow onion, diced
- 2 3/4 cups complete pancake and waffle mix, the “just add water” variety
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
Directions
Step 1 –Heat a large frying pan on medium-high heat.
Step 2 –Sauté the sausage, the bacon, and the onions in the frying pan until browned, about 5 minutes.
Step 3 –While the meat is cooking, combine the waffle mix, the water, and the melted butter in a large mixing bowl until no lumps remain.
Step 4 –Turn on the waffle maker.
Step 5 –Add the maple syrup to the frying pan, mixing well, and continuing to cook for 2-3 minutes.
Step 6 –Pour the sausage mixture into the waffle batter mixture, stirring to combine.
Step 7 –Spray the waffle maker with nonstick spray, then pour in enough of the waffle mixture to fill but not overfill it.
Step 8 –Cook until the waffle starts to brown, about 2-3 minutes.
Step 9 –Repeat until all of the batter is used.
Step 10 –Serve.
