Everyone knows and loves sloppy Joes, but Sloppy Ottos, their German-inspired sandwich cousins, have their own unique charm! Instead of beef, Sloppy Ottos call on spicy, savory sausage for their filling, accented with distinctly sweet and sour sauerkraut. Toasted and then topped with creamy melted cheese in each sandwich, you’ll be wondering why these haven’t caught on the way that the Joes have! Maybe these will become your favorite, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk spicy pork sausage
  • 1 1/2 cups sauerkraut, rinsed and well drained
  • 2 medium green and/or yellow peppers, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 8 pretzel hamburger buns, split
  • 8 slices provolone cheese

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, while crumbling, until it is no longer pink, about 4-6 minutes. Drain the fat from the skillet.

Step 3 –Add the sauerkraut, the peppers, and the onion and cook, while stirring, until the vegetables are tender, about 8-10 minutes longer.

Step 4 –Spoon an even amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom buns.

Step 5 –Place 1 slice of the cheese atop the meat mixture on each of the buns, then replace the top buns.

Step 6 –Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake until the cheese is melted, about 4-6 minutes.

Step 7 –Serve.
