Ingredients

  • 1 (2-2 1/2-pound) butternut squash, peeled and seeded, cut into thin slices
  • 2 tart apples, peeled and cored, cut into thin slices
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
  • pecan halves, to taste, for topping

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease a 2-2 1/2-quart baking dish.

Step 3 –In a large bowl, toss the squash and the apples together.

Step 4 –Transfer the squash-apple mixture to the prepared baking dish.

Step 5 –In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, the flour, the salt, the cinnamon, and the nutmeg.

Step 6 –Cut the butter into the brown sugar mixture with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.

Step 7 –Sprinkle the brown sugar crumbs over the squash-apple mixture.

Step 8 –Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake until the squash is tender, about 50-60 minutes.

Step 9 –Sprinkle with the pecans and serve.
