How Long Do LED Lights Last (And Why)?

Exact Answer: 4-6 years

The word LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It was invented by H.J. Round in1907. An LED produces light when current flows through it. The white light that is produced by most of the LED bulbs is formed by a mixture of semiconductors. LEDs are basically formed from semiconductors. When the current is passed through them, the excited electrons recombine with holes to produce energy in the form of light(photons). The color of the light is determined by the type of semiconductor used. Silicon is a semiconductor that is used widely.

LED lights are used so widely because of the multiple benefits it provides. It is much better than other light sources present out there in the market. Some of its advantages are that it is economical, consumes less power and has a longer life duration as compared to other light bulbs in the market.

How Long Do LED Lights Last?

There is a lot said about the life of LED. LEDs are known for their longer lifespan. People say that they may last up to 10-14 years. When seen in practice most of the LEDs last up to 4-6 years. This is because there are many factors that are responsible for internal damage that makes the light work for lesser duration.

LED needs a reliable power source because it needs an optimal supply of electricity for its functioning. An energy source known as driver makes sure that it receives enough amount of electricity at all times. Another factor that may reduce the life span of LED is the temperature of the place in which they are installed. There is a chip that is present in the bulb that needs an optimum temperature.

Even through there are several factors that decrease the lifespan of LED, it is much better than all other light sources. Following table shows the durability of LED as compared to other lights:-

Type Of LightDurability As Compared To LED
Incandescent Light50 times lesser
 Halogen Bulb20-25 times lesser
CFL8-10 times lesser

Why Do LED Lights Last For This Long?

LEDs are known to have the longest lifespans of all, may it incandescent bulbs or any other bulb. The major factor responsible for the longer lifespan of LED is the low heat it produces. The LEDs produce much less heat as compared to any other fluorescent source. Heat is the main reason why the light source goes bad.

Another factor that ensures its longer lifespan is the size of the light. LEDs are much lesser in size as compared to others. Again, heat is the factor that is responsible here. A lot of space in the LEDs can be used as a heat sink. This makes sure that the parts of the bulb are not getting damaged due to excessive heat.

LEDs have a less power draw which makes them more sustainable. Less power draw ensures that there is no wear and tear taking place internally. The most important reason as to why it is long-lived is that all the components of it are in solid form. For most of the bulbs, the inner compartment has gas which is responsible for energy generation. Here, all the components are in solid form. The only thing it needs for energy generation is semiconductors.

Conclusion

The LEDs are made up of semiconductors. They work on the electron hole concept. Semiconductors lack one electron and have an empty void called hole. When electron comes and combine with the hole, it releases energy that produces light. LEDs are getting popular all around the world and that too for a good reason. The benefits of using LED are innumerous.LEDs are able to turn 70% of energy into light and that too with high brightness and intensity. The first advantage that comes with LEDs is that they have a longer lifespan. It is made in such a way that it lasts for a long duration. Apart from being long-lived, it is also very economical.

As compared to other light sources, they are low on power and energy consumption. They are available in a variety of colors making them multipurpose. LEDs are not at all hazardous to health as they do not produce any UV or heat emissions. They are economical. LEDs are not at all toxic unlike mercury bulbs. They are only made up of semiconductors which makes them non toxic. LEDs are better than all other light and energy sources in all the aspects.
