Midwest Brown Sugar Meatloaf

Midwest Brown Sugar Meatloaf is the quintessential meatloaf, the one you picture when you hear the word “meatloaf.” The interior is wonderfully beefy and savory, flavored with onion soup seasonings and cooked until tender. On the outside, a coating of the sweet, tangy, brown sugar glaze that gives this meatloaf its name. From the heartland to the shore, everyone wants a slice of Midwest Brown Sugar Meatloaf!

Ingredients

For the meatloaf:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 (1-ounce) packet onion soup mix
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon table salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup milk

For the glaze:

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2 –In a large bowl, gently crumble the beef.

Step 3 –Add the breadcrumbs, the onion soup mix, the Worcestershire sauce, the egg, the salt, the black pepper, and the milk to the beef and gently mix to combine, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Step 4 –In a small bowl, add the ketchup, the vinegar, and the brown sugar and mix to combine.

Step 5 –Spread 1/2 of the glaze along the bottom and the sides of a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

Step 6 –Add the meatloaf mixture to the prepared loaf pan and press it firmly into a loaf shape.

Step 7 –Liberally brush the remaining glaze over the loaf.

Step 8 –Bake the meatloaf until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F, about 1 hour 10 minutes.

Step 9 –Let the meatloaf rest for 5 minutes.

Step 10 –Slice and serve.
