For the cookies:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

For the glaze:

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 16 ounces confectioners’ sugar


Step 1 –In a medium bowl, add the butter and the white sugar and mix with an electric hand mixer until they are well-blended.

Step 2 –Stir the eggs and 1 teaspoon of the vanilla extract into the butter mixture.

Step 3 –Stir in the sour cream.

Step 4 –Sift 2 3/4 cups of the flour, the baking powder, the salt, and the baking soda together, then stir it into the cookie dough.

Step 5 –Cover the cookie dough and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour and up to overnight.

Step 6 –Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 7 –Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
