Savory Scones

Sometimes sugary things are too much for your taste buds as you start your morning off. Well, never fear, Savory Scones are here! These soft, flaky, golden brown pastries are stuffed full of salty, tender ham and gooey, melted cheese. Imagine that savory goodness dipped in a slightly sweet but mostly tangy sauce–your palate won’t know what hit it (in the best way)! Savory Scones encompass all the good things of the baked goods you need as the sun rises!

Ingredients

For the sauce:

  • 1/2 cup peach preserves
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon wasabi powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

For the scones:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more, to taste, for dusting a work surface
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups ham, cooked and finely chopped
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 cups heavy cream

For the topping:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Directions

Step 1 –Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Step 2 –Grease a baking sheet.

Step 3 –In a bowl, combine the peach preserves, the horseradish, the wasabi powder, the ground mustard, and the ground ginger.

Step 4 –Refrigerate the sauce until time to serve.

Step 5 –In a large bowl, whisk 4 cups of the flour, the baking powder, and the salt.

Step 6 –Add the ham and the cheese to the flour mixture and toss to combine.

Step 7 –Stir the heavy cream into the ham mixture until just moistened.

Step 8 –Using the extra flour, lightly dust a work surface. Place the dough on the prepared surface.

Step 9 –Gently knead the dough 10 times.

Step 10 –Pat the dough into two 7-inch circles.

Step 11 –Cut each circle of dough into six wedges.

Step 12 –Place the wedges on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 13 –In a small bowl, whisk the egg and the water.

Step 14 –Brush the egg wash over the scones and then sprinkle with the poppy seeds.

Step 15 –Bake the scones until golden-brown, about 40-45 minutes.

Step 16 –Serve warm with the peach sauce.
